Calculating Keyword/Key-phrase Density

Keyword density is the number of times your focus keyword occurs in your writing, compared to the total text of that page.

Keyword density is the number of times your focus keyword occurs in your writing, compared to the total text of that page.

  • If you have a text that is 100 words and 5 of those are your focus key-phrase, your key-phrase density is 5%.

The Key to Hitting Creative & Technical Targets:

Why should I calculate my key-phrase density?

  • It's important for SEO because Google tries to match a user’s search query to the best-fitting web pages.
  • Calculating the key-phrase density before or after you write your content piece is a mathematical rule of thumb to help you make sure your content piece does not sound repetitive to readers.
  • Will ensure fewer revisions on submitted drafts

The Recommended Key-phrase Density is at least 0.5%-2% per 100 words!

Your key-phrase density percentage goal should depend on how long your key-phrase is. If you are trying to rank for a longer phrase, it might be more difficult to use it a certain number of times in your text as opposed to using a shorter key-phrase.

  • When planning for sufficient use of a long key-phrase, you may decide for at-least 1% key-phrase density per 100 words.
  • When planning for sufficient use of a short key-phrase, you may decide for at-least 2% key-phrase density per 100 words.

Your final key-phrase density percentage could be 0.1%-0.5% above or below a targeted key-phrase density percentage.

  • Ensure your final key-phrase density percentage could not be rounded up or down a full-integer, then it's safe to assume that you're not over-using/under-using the key-phrase. You are encouraged of course to use your best judgements as a writer.

If content brief asks for an SEO Title, a meta description & slug, the keyword/keyphrase should be included in each
