Research and Citing Your Sources

Knowing where and how to cite sources is essential for every writer.

Quality content contains verifiable, factually accurate information and it’s essential to know where to find it and how to cite it.

Citations are not optional. If the client hasn’t provided direct links to the information, you’ll need to put your internet skills to work and properly cite your sources. Failure to do so weakens the validity of your content, and in some cases constitutes plagiarism.

Here are some helpful tips to ensure you are sourcing your work correctly.

  • Link to the Original Source: Lots of websites have information sourced from somewhere else. Good content always references the original source. Be sure you’re not linking to an article that references another article, always use the original source.
  • Only Use Credible Links: Only link to reputable, nationally accredited organizations. While you may find information that supports the point you’re trying to make, if there’s no way to verify the validity of that information, it cannot be used in your content. Websites ending in “.gov”, “.edu” are usually safe to use as authoritative sources.
  • In-line Citations or Bibliography: There are various standards of source citation. You’ve likely heard of the most popular styles: APA, CMS, MLA, AP, etc. Scripted has its own style for content writing, but we also give customers the ability to define their preferred style and approach.
  • Make Sure It’s Compliant: For example, content in the Health/Legal/Financial industries needs sources throughout due to legal obligations. Make sure you’re not making any statements that constitute advice and focus on fact-based statements only.
  • Avoid Plagiarism: Your citations should usually support your point, and not be direct quotes when possible. While some content you write will directly require quotes, you can simply state your point while linking to the source of the information itself. Taking passages from other works and not citing them is 100% plagiarism, and one of the quickest ways to get your Scripted account revoked for good!
