What Should I Do When A Client Wants To Discuss Pricing?

Pricing discussions can be confusing for both parties. Here are some tips on best practices when the topic of payment arises.

While it may seem natural to discuss pricing via messaging, we request that writers do not engage in pricing negotiation as per Scripted policy.

A client's pricing is dependent on a number of factors and that information is not available to Scripted Writers. It's also worth keeping in mind that neither the client nor the writer has the ability to make any changes to the pricing when a job has been started. As such, the quote you give the client may be incorrect, causing frustration for both parties.

However, we know that the scope of a job may sometimes expand after revisions and require changes to both word count and pricing. So what should you do if the subject of pricing comes up?

  • The best strategy is to advise the client to contact us at support@scripted.com. The Support team will be happy to get the pricing configured for both you and the client and adjust the word count as needed.
  • If the client insists on discussing the job pricing off-platform, simply notify Support and let the client know that Scripted Writers are not permitted to discuss pricing off-platform. This is to protect both the client and the writer, as we won't be able to guarantee deadlines for the former or payment for the latter if there's no record of the agreement.
  • If the client is discussing a set price for a number of pieces, reach out to Support to explain the situation and our team may be able to create a custom format for you and the client depending on the scope.

In general,  the best practice for discussing pricing with clients is to avoid the subject and notify Support. We'll jump in and take the situation off your plate so that you can get back to writing!
